Frequently asked questions
Counselling is a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences at a pace that feels comfortable for you.Counselling is not about being given advice or being told what to do. The counselling relationship provides a confidential, neutral space where you can be honest and talk things through with someone who has no personal agenda or bias, allowing greater clarity and understanding to emerge over time.
Initially we will arrange a time to have a free 20 minute introductory call before booking your first counselling session in. This gives us an opportunity to talk about where you’re at and what you’re looking for from counselling. I will tell you a bit more about myself and the way that I work. It’s also a chance for you to ensure that the support I offer feels like the right fit for you. There is no obligation to continue afterwards.
Yes, everything we talk about in counselling is confidential. The only exceptions are situations where there’s a legal obligation to share information, such as risk of serious harm. If this ever came up, I’d discuss it with you first wherever possible.
Sessions are usually held weekly, though this can be discussed and reviewed depending on your needs and availability. Each session lasts 50-minutes. The length of time you stay in counselling varies - some people come for short-term support (6-12 weeks), others choose to work longer-term. This is something we can review together, but is totally your choice.
Some people come with something specific they want to work through over a shorter period of time. Others find it helpful to work longer term and want to continue exploring different areas of their life. We will review regularly, see how things are going and look at our progress. You are free to stop at any point.
Yes. I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which means I adhere to their professional standards and ethical framework.
Counselling should always feel like a choice and it’s important that it feels right for you. If you decide not to continue, that decision will always be respected. Endings can be a meaningful part of counselling and where possible it can be helpful to plan this together. There is no pressure to decide this in advance and it can be discussed as the work develops.
Cancellations require a minimum of 48 hours' notice. Missed or non-attended sessions with less than 48 hours' notice will be charged in full. If I am unable to attend a session, I will let you know as soon as possible and will do my best to make alternative arrangements.
